The STO Innovates Again

Published : 06-18-2012

The Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) is officially launching its new high-tech smart card today, the Multi. Now available at all STO service points, this card completes the new ticketing system and offers an even more appealing range of fare options.

The STO was already innovative in 1998 when it introduced the contactless smart card as a payment method on buses. More practical, reliable and secure for riders, the new technology made it possible to introduce fares more suited to the needs of different public transit clienteles.

Today, the STO is continuing to innovate with the introduction of this second generation smart card. In fact, several payment options have been added, such as an e-wallet for occasional trips and supplements, and the possibility of combining several passes on a single smart card. The card is also compatible with OC Transpo’s future smart card system, Presto.

“The upgrade is based on new technologies that will benefit STO riders even more. We have always been a leader in the field, and we plan to remain in this role,” explained STO Chairman Patrice Martin.

In addition, within a few months, riders will be able to recharge their smart cards directly on the STO's Web site, and new options such as e-tickets will be introduced.

“The idea is to provide a competitive option to taking a car by offering a simple payment method that can be accessed from home or work. The new smart card will reach this objective thanks to its different applications,” pointed out Mr. Martin.

To help riders find their bearings as this service is gradually implemented, a targeted communications campaign will allow everyone to get the new smart card within the planned 12-month time-frame.

This project to update the fare collection system, which also involves replacing equipment, developing software and adding new features, represents an investment of a little over $3,200,000. The Quebec Ministry of Transport has funded 75% of the total project costs under the provisions of the government’s public transit assistance program.

The STO is continuing its efforts to improve the quality of service for its clientele by upgrading the fare collection system, and is pleased that it can offer even more when it comes to new technologies. The STO’s smart card is now used by 85% of riders. To learn more about the features of the new smart card, visit sto.ca/multi.
