A Partner in Sustainable Mobility

In keeping with its sustainable development directions, which are closely linked to its corporate mission, the Société de transport de l'Outaouais (STO) makes a daily effort to help improve the environment.

The STO's public transit system provides more than 20 million trips annually. By reducing the number of people who drive alone in their car, public transit also reduces city traffic congestion, the consumption of non-renewable resources such as gas, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Public transit also helps to limit the investments in infrastructures (road maintenance and construction) and is a reliable, safe means of transportation.

Thanks to the STO, every day:

  • More than 640,000 kilometres are not travelled by car;
  • 67,000 litres of gas are not consumed;
  • The equivalent of 162 tonnes of CO2 are not emitted.

The bus, a sustainable, winning choice.

  • It is about 8.5 times cheaper that acquiring and using a car.
  • It is a particularly safe travel option, where the risk of an accident is about 10 to 20 times lower than in a car.
  • It is good for health because it is an active mode of travel that promotes walking. According to the Association du transport urbain du Québec (ATUQ), on average, an STO patron walks more than 1,000 steps per day, or more than 10% of the recommended amount of physical activity.

The bus is a key player in mobility, choose this option to help protect the world!

Rapibus, a solid example of sustainable transportation

Sustainable transportation is a high priority when it comes to the STO's actions and major projects to build a greener city.

The Rapibus, a bus rapid transit system that includes a 12 km two-way lane for the exclusive use of buses, is a good example. Synonymous with a positive impact on air quality and a reduction in greenhouse gases, this public transit system has a bicycle path and incentive parking facilities to encourage sustainable mobility.
