Work on the Portage Bridge towards Gatineau. Traffic slowdowns expected as of April 1, PM. www.sto.ca

Over the next few months, work will be done on three of our interprovincial bridges: the Portage, Chaudière and Alexandra bridges.

This work will have some impacts on the services offered by the STO.

Work on the Portage Bridge

The National Capital Commission will be working as of this Saturday, March 30, until June 30, 2019. Work will take place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Work will also be done in the evenings and at night, but no impact on the system is anticipated. No work will be done on Sundays.

For the moment, we expect traffic slowdowns on afternoon routes coming from downtown Ottawa for the trip home, when traffic heading to Gatineau will be reduced to two lanes on the bridge, with one lane reserved for buses and carpooling.

Our teams will be continuously monitoring the service and will make the required adjustments to reduce the impact on our clientele. Also, as the work affects traffic congestion over the summer, measures will be implemented.

Work on the Chaudière and Alexandra bridges

Starting in June, work will also take place on the Chaudière Bridge (June to August 2019) and Alexandra Bridge (June 2019 to June 2020).

Although STO buses do not use these bridges, the traffic congestion caused by the work will no doubt impact bus service.

Some alternatives

  • Walk across the bridge:
    • Pedestrians will have to use the sidewalk on the west side of the bridge.
    • For some routes, trips could start in downtown Hull to keep our buses from getting caught up in traffic on the Ottawa side.
  • Cycle:
    • Northbound: Cyclists will have to use the sidewalk on the east side of the bridge.  
    • Southbound: Cyclists will have to use the current bike lane, which will be reduced.
  • Carpool:
    • One of the traffic lanes will be reserved for buses and carpooling with two or more people.

We also invite you to download the Transit app to find out how long it will take, in real time, for your bus to arrive at your stop, since its stop time is adjusted based on the bus's location on the route. You can then decide whether or not to take a different bus depending on the real time when other bus routes will be stopping.
