Universal Accessibility
Universal accessibility aims to eliminate any barriers that might limit people from carrying out their daily activities. This approach takes the needs of people living with impairments into account, as well as the needs of anybody who might have to deal with situations involving an impairment. In short, the principle of universal accessibility is based essentially on the idea of creating an obstacle-free environment.
The Rapibus puts great importance on universal accessibility by integrating the following elements:
- The pavement consist of tactile plates to help guide people safely and efficiently to boarding areas.
- A pedestrian overpass with an elevator for people with reduced mobility (Station de la Cité).
- Sidewalks and pedestrian access lanes with a minimum of 1,500 mm to 2,000 mm wide to accommodate people in wheelchairs, using walkers or with baby strollers.
- In the Rapibus waiting areas, the placement of furniture and any other built elements takes the space needed for wheelchair users into account by removing elements that create physical obstacles.
- The height of service counters is adapted for people in wheelchairs.
- A tactile warning strip along the bus loading.
- Efficient signage to help riders find the stations and various services.
- Building entrances and exits fitted with automatic detection systems or push buttons to open the doors.
- Variable message signs indicating trips offered by a bus with an access ramp.
