The STO Marks Earth Day

As part of its sustainable development approach, the Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) strives to help protect the environment every day.

With more than 20 million trips in 2011, the STO contributes to reducing the number of people who commute alone in their cars, thereby also helping to decrease the region’s carbon footprint. In fact, every day the STO provides more than 65,000 trips, or the equivalent of 25,000 fewer vehicles on the region’s roads.

The STO invites everyone to celebrate Earth Day on April 22 by enjoying a family outing with the Family Fare that is available every weekend.

And… look out for the STO squad on April 20!

As Earth Day approaches, the STO is proud to present the green actions it takes every day.

Every Action Can Make a Difference

Because every action counts, here are the actions that STO makes everyday to protect the environment:

  • Retreading used tires;
  • Recovering and reusing more than 40,000 litres of waste oil and close to 1,000 oil filters annually;
  • Fueling all buses are with biodiesel, once the frost season has passed;
  • Acquiring low-floor buses equipped with a urea-based filtration system, an non-toxic and odourless technology which help to realize significant fuel savings and contribute to a cleaner environment.
  • Using green detergents for the ongoing maintenance operations of its bus fleet.

Employees Help Reduce the Environmental Footprint

Thanks to the efforts of all employees, the STO :

  • recycles close to 25 tons of paper, cardboard and glass;
  • composts 320 litres of organic matter per week;
  • recovers old batteries and many electronic products;
  • uses biotechnology products, which are non-corrosive and 100% biodegradable products for the maintenance of the garage, bus wash, engines and various bus parts has been done using.

In recognition of its green efforts, the STO received a plaque acknowledging its many actions undertaken as part of its commitment to the environment, health and safety in the workplace. Using Innu-Science products has made it possible to completely eliminate the used of solvent, a product that is harmful for the environment.
