Characteristics of the three potential transit scenarios in Western Gatineau

All tram scenario

The service would be offered on both of the dedicated transit system's corridors with trams.

Advantages

  • Most users are located directly on the corridors, with the system passing directly through living environments.
  • A single mode for the entire west end.
  • A direct link from Plateau to the Université du Québec en Outaouais.
  • Reduce number of buses in Ottawa.

Challenges

  • Riders coming from the west end who are not directly on the dedicated system's corridors would have to transfer from a bus.
  • The service is concentrated on one corridor on chemin d'Aylmer, to the east of boulevard Saint-Raymond. In the event of a system failure, service would be interrupted.

Infrastructure To Be Constructed

  • A 23 km tram line with double tracks.

Hybrid Tram and Rapid Bus Transit Scenarios

With the first hybrid scenario, the service would be offered on the Allumettières/Plateau corridor with trams and on the Aylmer/Taché corridor with articulated buses.

With the second hybrid scenario, the service would be offered on the Aylmer/Taché corridor with trams and on the Allumettières/Plateau corridor with articulated buses.

Advantages

  • Most users are located directly on the corridor, with the system passing directly through living environments.
  • The service is split between two corridors, offering an alternative in case of a system failure.

Challenges

  • Riders coming from the west end who are not directly on the dedicated corridors would have to transfer from a bus.
  • The trams on one of the corridors and the buses on the other, as well as the buses on the Rapibus and some buses in the Hull sector destined for Ottawa would get to Ottawa via the Portage Bridge, which would mean a large number of public transit vehicles on the bridge and in downtown Ottawa.

Infrastructure To Be Constructed

  • A 16 km tram line with double tracks  and a 12 km rapid bus transit system.

Service Offer (for the three scenarios)

  • The sectors located close to the corridors would connect with the dedicated system's corridors through a local bus service.
  • The local bus system outside of the dedicated transit system's corridors would be improved through reserved lanes in congested areas, priority measures for buses at traffic lights, improved frequency, etc.
  • The complementary links for local buses would be available, for instance to the Cégep on Cité-des-Jeunes, and to Tunney's Pasture, via the Champlain Bridge.
  • The frequency of trams and buses on the dedicated transit system's corridors would be very convenient.
