The STO Reaches 20 Million Trips!

Published : 02-03-2012

The Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) is proud to announce that it will reach an outstanding ridership mark today of 20 million trips on its system in 2011.

“Mass transit continues to grow and meet people’s mobility needs better, making it an increasingly viable option to an automobile,” said STO Chairman Patrice Martin. “Today’s success can be attributed to the loyalty of our patrons and shows that public transit continues to grow in appeal among the population,” he added.

The STO posted exceptional ridership numbers in 2011. During the summer, the Société already noted an increase in a period that is usually quieter, reaching a peak of 6.5% in July. This trend continued to the end of 2011, allowing the STO to cap the year with an average cumulative increase of more than 4%.

To highlight this outstanding performance, the STO is launching the contest 20 million trips: I made it happen! The prize offered in this draw is a one-year public transit pass in each category (Adult, Student, Senior). The contest starts today and runs until February 4, 2012. To enter, simply visit sto.ca and select the desired pass. In addition, to thank patrons for their loyalty and commitment, a special STO squad boarded different buses in the morning to distribute various gifts randomly to riders.

According to the chairman, these positive results can be attributed to a number of factors. “The STO continues to invest in improving its service in all areas of the city,” explained Mr. Martin. “Introducing Plani-Bus was definitely a tool that helped encourage public transit use, and the variety of fares available is suited to the needs of different rider segments.”

To sustain this growth and maintain quality service, the STO can count on major investments from financial partners such as the Quebec Ministry of Transport (MTQ) with its various public transit assistance programs, and the City of Gatineau. An essential player in economic, social and tourism development, public transit is part of the vitality of Gatineau and its region and contributes to improving the quality of life of its citizens. “When we reach record ridership levels, everyone wins, both from the environmental and economic aspect,” added the chairman.
